Georgia is seeking to stage the 2027 European Junior Taekwondo Championships and 2027 European Olympic Weight Categories Championships in Tbilisi, but the proposed double event still requires final approval.
Georgia has advanced its bid for Tbilisi to host the 2027 European Junior Taekwondo Championships and 2027 European Olympic Weight Categories Championships, a proposed double event combining junior and senior Olympic-weight competition in the Georgian capital.
The proposal was discussed during a working meeting at Georgia’s Ministry of Sport. First Deputy Minister Irakli Medzmariashvili and Deputy Minister Irakli Dolaberidze attended alongside European Taekwondo Sports Director Ioannis Mouroutsos. Georgian National Taekwondo Federation president Alexander Todua and vice-president Levan Piolia also took part.
Under the proposal, the European junior championships would be staged alongside the senior European Olympic Weight Categories Championships. Organisers estimate that the two competitions could attract about 1,000 athletes to Tbilisi.
The talks represent progress for Georgia’s bid, not confirmation that Tbilisi has secured the events. As of 4 August 2026, European Taekwondo had not publicly announced a final decision on the 2027 hosts, and the proposal remained subject to Executive Board approval. If selected, Georgia would join the European competition calendar during the Los Angeles 2028 cycle. The junior championships would feature emerging athletes from across the continent, while the Olympic-weight event would offer senior competition in the divisions used at the Olympic Games.
The next material development will be the Executive Board’s decision, followed by confirmation of the host city, competition dates and venue.
