Asian Taekwondo Union Announces Key Committee Leadership Appointments for 2026

Event Overview

The Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) has confirmed a series of high-level committee appointments in March 2026, reinforcing its organizational structure across multiple disciplines within World Taekwondo. The appointments include leadership roles in the Technical Committee, Poomsae Committee, and Para Taekwondo Committee, reflecting the federation’s continued efforts to strengthen governance and technical development across the continent.

Leadership Across Key Disciplines

Byung-hee Kim has been appointed as Chair of the ATU Technical Committee, a role central to overseeing competition regulations, referee standards, and the overall technical integrity of kyorugi events across Asia.

In parallel, Satoru Saito has been named Chair of the ATU Poomsae Committee, taking responsibility for the development and standardization of recognized poomsae competitions within the region.

Additionally, Jatuporn Hemwonno has been appointed as Chair of the ATU Para Taekwondo Committee, a position that plays a crucial role in advancing inclusivity and the structured growth of para taekwondo programs under World Taekwondo regulations.

Importance of the Appointments

These appointments reflect a coordinated effort by the Asian Taekwondo Union to reinforce technical oversight and discipline-specific development pathways. The Technical Committee remains fundamental to maintaining consistency in competition standards, particularly in kyorugi, while the Poomsae and Para Taekwondo Committees play increasingly important roles as those disciplines continue to expand both regionally and globally.

With Asia remaining one of the most competitive and influential regions in World Taekwondo, leadership stability at the committee level directly impacts athlete development, referee education, and event quality across all categories, from Cadet to Senior levels.

What This Means for Asian Taekwondo

The selection of experienced leadership across these committees is expected to support the continued growth of structured competitions and technical excellence within the region. It also aligns with broader World Taekwondo objectives focused on standardization, accessibility, and global expansion.

In particular, the strengthening of the Para Taekwondo Committee highlights ongoing efforts to elevate para disciplines within the international competition framework, ensuring greater visibility and development opportunities for para athletes.
