The World Taekwondo Council unanimously awarded the 2028 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships to Antalya during an Extraordinary Meeting in Chuncheon.
Antalya, Türkiye, will host the 2028 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships after receiving unanimous approval from the World Taekwondo Council at its Extraordinary Meeting in Chuncheon on 15 September.
The Türkiye Taekwondo Federation presented its bid before the Council, which met on the eve of the Chuncheon 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue and federation vice-president Engin Sarıkaya subsequently signed the hosting agreement.
Türkiye last staged the championships in Ankara in 2008. Antalya’s selection will therefore bring the event back to the country—and to Europe—20 years later. Federation president Bahri Tanrıkulu said preparations would begin immediately, building on Antalya’s experience of staging the international Türkiye Open.
Exact competition dates and the venue within Antalya had not been announced as of 16 September 2026. TAEKWONDO.TV will follow the event as its dates, venue and entry documentation are confirmed.
The Council also considered the continuing review of the 2025 Oceania Taekwondo Union electoral process. World Taekwondo said its Ethics and Juridical Committees would complete their work and submit their findings to the Council. No final outcome from that review was announced at the meeting.
Future World Taekwondo-promoted events proposed for Russia will be assessed individually. The Council identified athlete and delegation safety, equal and non-discriminatory access for all member national associations, anti-doping compliance, political neutrality and operational readiness as factors in that process.
World Taekwondo vice-president Jin-bang Yang presented the Council with an update on the federation’s Smart Protector and Scoring System project. The basic development phase is scheduled to conclude by the end of 2027, with testing at G1 and G2 competitions potentially beginning in 2028 before any progressive introduction at major championships.
World Taekwondo has identified the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games as the long-term target for full implementation. The timetable remains developmental rather than a confirmed competition rollout.
