World Taekwondo is reviewing objections to a disputed extraordinary general assembly that has renewed uncertainty over the governance of the Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU).
The dispute does not reopen the OTU presidential election concluded in September 2025. Maher Magableh remains the publicly recognised president, but the validity of the later assembly and any decisions attributed to it are being contested.
At issue is whether the extraordinary general assembly was convened and conducted in accordance with the OTU Constitution. Questions have been raised about who had the authority to call the meeting, the notice and agenda issued to members, participation and quorum, and the validity of any resolutions attributed to the assembly.
The constitution sets specific requirements for an extraordinary session. The president may convene one when necessary, while more than one-third of the council or member associations may also request a meeting. Notice must be issued at least one month in advance and state the date, time, format, location and business to be considered. Eligible voters who cannot attend in person must also be able to participate remotely.
World Taekwondo’s review could determine whether the meeting and its resolutions should be recognised or whether further procedural action is required. The latest disagreement follows a turbulent 2025 election cycle. An earlier presidential process was annulled amid governance concerns before Magableh defeated former president John Kotsifas 11–3 in a re-run on 29 September 2025. That result established the leadership term for 2025–2029; the current dispute concerns subsequent governance rather than an unfinished presidential ballot.
The OTU’s public-facing organisation page still lists the former council led by Kotsifas, conflicting with later federation material that identifies Magableh as president.
As of 4 August 2026, no final World Taekwondo ruling or official confirmation of a leadership change arising from the disputed extraordinary general assembly had been announced.
